Celebrate International Talk Like a Pirate Day at the Greater Cleveland Aquarium

unnamedAhoy, me hearties!
In 1995 John Bauer (Ol’ Chumbucket) and Mark Summers (Cap’n Slappy) proclaimed September 19th the day when we should all talk like pirates.
Save your doubloons by celebrating International Talk Like a Pirate Day (ITLAPD).
On Wednesday, September 19, come dressed as a pirate or read a randomly selected phrase while doing your best pirate impression and receive $5 off of your admission that day.
“A little practice will help you deliver those ‘arrrrrrrrs,’ ‘mateys’ and ‘ahoys’ with confidence and character,” jokes Erin Bauer, Director of Education and Interpretation at the Aquarium. There are many pirate phrases from which to choose, notes Bauer. “An actual pirate was referred to as a freebooter and a landlubber is someone with very little sailing experience.”
The first 75 daring buccaneers to attempt an ITLAPD phrase at the Ticket Counter receive an eyepatch.
In addition to regularly scheduled Sharks & Scuba Talks (11:15am & 1:30pm) and a stingray feed (3pm), other  International Talk Like A Pirate Day Aquarium fun includes:
  • the opportunity to craft your own pirate accessories (11am-3pm),
  • appearances by friendly land shark Finn (11:30am & 2pm),
  • a chance to win prizes or a year-long family pass by embarking on a scavenger hunt and
  • searching for “hidden treasure” in the exhibits (10am-5pm).

Guest blog for ClevelandKiddos.com

When I started Cleveland Kiddos, my goal was to provide a resource for families looking for fun things to do in Cleveland and surrounding areas with their kids.

There are so many kid-friendly events happening this summer and beyond in Cleveland. While I wish I had nothing better to do then to attend all these fun happenings with my own kiddos and write about them, the reality is, I am only one person with a very busy schedule. I just can’t do it alone.

I can use some help in making this blog a more helpful resource and to help make that happen, I am now accepting submissions to ClevelandKiddos.com.

If you would like to submit a guest post to promote or give a review of local happenings and venues, or if you have other helpful kid resources and article ideas such as summer safety for kids or craft ideas, please contact me by filling out the submission form below.

Science is a Blast at “Mythbusters: The Explosive Exhibit” at the Great Lakes Science Center

My kids are huge fans of the TV show “Mythbusters”, so when the Great Lakes Science Center invited my family to come check out their newest exhibit: “Mythbusters: The Explosive Exhibit“, I was really excited.

Mythbusters: The Explosive Exhibit - February 7 - May 3, 2015 at the Cleveland Great Lakes Science Center

Unfortunately my husband and kids had plans that morning, so my sister and niece got to come with me instead.  I knew it was going to be a really fun exhibit for the kids, but I honestly had no idea how much fun it would be for the adults as well!

Mythbusters: The Explosive Exhibit

The exhibit features two galleries. When we first entered, we took some time looking through the display featuring over 60 artifacts taken from experiments conducted on the show that fans will instantly recognize, including; the 20-foot mechanical shark, the jet pack, the “buried alive” coffin, the arrow machine gun, and of course, Buster, the MythBusters’ infamous stunt dummy.

There is even one artifact in the display that has not been aired on the show and so the results are being kept a secret behind duct tape.

My niece also enjoyed flipping through blueprint books illustrating some of the experiments.

Next, we moved into the workshop where it was time to try to bust some myths on our own!

The first hands-on experiment we got to try was called BUTTER SIDE UP , where you try to test the myth about toast landing butter side down.  This first experiment had several ways to test the myth out and it was so much fun, that Great Lakes Science Center CEO, Kirsten Ellenbogen, made a joke about how much time we spent here.  We had no idea how much more there was to do!

We next moved on to RUNNING IN THE RAIN.  Stuck in a rainstorm without an umbrella? Is it better to run or walk?  In this experiment, you will actually get to run through simulated rain and then test your results in a mirror under a black light.

There were several other fun myths to test out.  My sister and I  started getting quite competitive.

CAN YOU DODGE A BULLET? It took me 45 seconds, which according to one of the employees at the Science center, was the fastest time he had seen so far. (Can you beat my time?) (Also check out this embarrasing video proof:)

We also enjoyed seeing who could HANG FROM A LEDGE the longest.  (It’s a lot harder than it looks!)

Mythbusters The Explosive Exhibit - Cliff Hanger

There is a phone booth where you can change into a superhero. (Can you do it in under 60 seconds?)

Set up a table and see if you can pull the tablecloth out from under it.  My sister and I both lost a drinking glass, so that one was a tie.

You can spend so much time having fun testing out all these different myths and more. (Here’s a full description of all the different myths you can try to bust.)  I was really surprised by how many things there were to do and you’re still not finished…..

Exclusive to Cleveland, is the Duct Tape Studio which was created in honor of Cleveland’s love for duct tape.  You can spend plenty of time in this room alone crafting things out of duct tape.

Finally, at the end of the exhibit, you can submit your own myths that may be used in future shows.

Mythbusters The Explosive Exhibit - Suggest a Myth

There’s still more!  In addition, to the exhibit, the Great Lakes Science center is also offering several programs related to the Mythbusters theme including an adults only science night, sleepovers, day camps and homeschooling programs!

I could go on and on about what a fun and educational exhibit this is! I’m looking forward to going back very soon with my own kids because I feel like even in the couple of hours I was there, I could have definitely spent more time!

In my opinion, this was one of the most fun exhibits I’ve ever experienced at the Great Lakes Science center and whether you take the kiddos or go with adults,  I’m sure you will have a similar experience.

Mythbusters: The Explosive Exhibit runs now through May 3rd.  Be sure to check out Great Lakes Science Center’s website for more information and to help plan your next visit!

Mythbusters exhibit at the Great Lakes Science Center: don't try this at home

disclosure: The Great Lakes Science Center invited me to come check out this exhibit for free, but my opinion about how much fun it was, is truly my own!
